    Event Description:
New England Pirates Stephen C. O'Neill Sr Lecturer Suffolk University Executive Director Hanover Historical Society Most people associate pirates with the Caribbean, but New England was just as closely connected with Atlantic Piracy during the Golden Age, 1660-1730. This illustrated talk explores some of the fascinating stories of pirates off and on the New England coast. From Plymouth to Newport, from Boston to the Isles of Shoals, pirates often appear in dramatic episodes of New England's colonial history: a Marblehead fisherman abducted pirates, a retired pirate running a tavern in Newport, one of the most famous pirates arrested in downtown Boston, and the body of an executed pirate hung from a gibbet on an island in Boston Harbor. And New England's execution sermons and trial transcripts provided the materials for later pirate accounts that created the popular image of pirate that last to today.
