PRESS RELEASE FOR HERITAGE DAYS
Scituate Heritage Days:
Waterfront Festival Celebrates Scituate’s Love of the Sea
August 7-9, 2009 at Scituate Harbor
Scituate Heritage Days, a three-day festival celebrating the maritime heritage of the historic town of Scituate, Massachusetts, is being held adjacent to Scituate Harbor on August 7-9, 2009. Now in its 41st year, the annual event will take place on Front Street, the community’s scenic commercial and retail district and will feature a live music festival, a juried artisan fair, a kiddie carnival, a waterfront marketplace, nautical competitions and tours of historic sites around town. Times for scheduled events and tours vary, but the festival at the harbor, featuring music and nearly 100 artisans, exhibitors and vendors, is free and open to the public from 9-5, Saturday and Sunday. More information on times including free shuttle services from the Greenbush MBTA station and Scituate High School is available at scituatechamber.org
Organized by the Scituate Chamber of Commerce, Scituate Heritage days has become a summertime destination for families living year-round in this coastal community, summer residents from across the U.S., and welcomed visitors from across Greater Boston. According to Dan Taylor of the Scituate Chamber of Commerce, “It’s the one time of year that everyone who knows and loves Scituate has the opportunity to enjoy all the traditions of a thriving seaside community. It’s our chance to not only showcase the natural beauty of our harbor area, but the shops, restaurants, artisans, and businesses that sustain our character all year long.” Each year approximately 30,000 attendees visit Scituate Heritage Days. All events within the festival are open to the public.
THE MUSIC FESTIVAL
The Music Festival of Scituate Heritage Day is a non-stop rotation of national recording artists and local bands taking the stage throughout the weekend. On Saturday, August 8th headliners include The Lynch Brothers, Girls, Guns and Glory, The Fools, and Jonathan Edwards. On Sunday, August 9th Tara Joy, Toni Lynn Washington, The Flamingos, Ernie and the Automatics, and Foghat will perform. There is no charge to attend.
Girls Guns and Glory – Saturday@11am
In the tradition of showcasing local talent, the festival welcomes home Girls Guns and Glory, which formed in Scituate in 2005 when former band-mates and high school friends, Ward Hayden (lead vocals/acoustic guitar) and Bruce Beagley (bass), teamed up to record Ward’s original compositions. They entered Noise in the Attic Studio and began work on the GG&G debut CD “Fireworks and Alcohol.” The success of that release fueled the formation of a 5-piece lineup that began to work the New England club scene in earnest. Their sophomore release, “Pretty Little Wrecking Ball”, in February of 2007, proved to be the catalyst in a break-out year for the band as they collected 2 Boston Phoenix awards, numerous articles in the press, and lots of radio play - culminating in a Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Americana Act of the Year”. The band solidified it’s lineup as a strong 4-piece featuring John Graham on drums and Colt Thompson on guitar.
The Fools – Saturday Afternoon
A more established Boston area band, The Fools has been entertaining Boston fans and national audiences for decades. Formed in Ipswich, MA, the group was first know as The Rhythm A’s and became the Fools after they branded themselves with stage trickery, pratfalls, skits, themes, twisted audience participation, practical jokes, paybacks, big nights and even some colossal events. Then they discovered radio with 1979’s "Psycho Chicken," a parody of The Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer.” Other hits followed leading them to sign with EMI and where they shared a stage with the likes of Rush, Blondie, Jefferson Starship, The Knack, and a tour Van Halen. After a brief retirement on Cape Cod, they wrote “World Dance Party” with its title track that launched them back on the national circuit. With MTV far behind them, they continue to entertain with spectacle and splendor, the legendary bombast, and the shock and the awe known as The Fools.
Jonathan Edwards – Saturday Afternoon
Once you hear Jonathan Edwards' voice, you'll want to hear it again and again. His rich, warm tenor has a distinctively unique and natural quality. Jonathan has acquired an enviable track record, one of skill and grace in the sometimes brutal world of the music business. And he has done it while keeping intact his ear for a strong melody and love of a beautifully crafted song. During his 37-year career he has recorded 15 albums and penned such notable hits as "Shanty" and "Sunshine", which earned him a gold record in 1971. This classic song, covered by Paul Westerberg, is included in the 1995 release of "Friends", a compilation of music for the hit NBC-TV show, and is heard in the 2004 Will Ferrell film “Anchorman” and included on the soundtrack. His 1987 children's album, "Little Hands", selected by the National Library Association as a "Notable Children's Recording", has sold over 20,000 copies and is still going strong.
Tara Joy – Sunday@10am
Rising star and Massachusetts native, Tara Joy has been living her dream of being a country music singer. An 18 year old fresh out of high school, she has been singing publicly since she was eight years old. Tara proudly reveals that her favorite song is the “National Anthem” and she enjoys performing it for the country’s veterans at any event where our country’s service men and women are being honored. According to Tara, “They are the reason I’m here!” In addition to being an enthusiastic live performer, Tara is an accomplished award-winning artists winning the titles of New England Country Music Organization's 13-16 Female Vocalist of the Year 2006,
13-16 Female Entertainer of the Year 2006, 2006 People's Choice Award, The North American Country Music Association Int’ 13-16 Female Vocalist Rising Star of the Year 2007, and the New England Country Music Organization's 17-20 Female Vocalist of the Year 2007 and 17-20 Female Entertainer of the Year 2007.
Toni Lynn Washington – Sunday@10:45am
Toni Lynn Washington is known by many Roots music enthusiasts as Boston's queen of the blues. She got her start singing in Gospel choirs and eventually found herself performing with Jackie Wilson, as well as Sam & Dave. With soulful inflections that trail off in deep, sultry tremolos, Washington's spiritually-influenced vocal style adds an extra dimension of atmosphere to whomever is lucky enough to accompany her. She has had seven Blues Music Award nominations. Washington received the 1999 Boston Blues Festival Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2003 she released her fourth CD since 1997, and her first on the NorthernBlues label.
Ernie and the Automatics – Sunday@2:30pm
Another Boston area favorite Ernie and the Automatics is making its first appearance at Heritage Days. The members of Ernie and the Automatics have sold over 30 Million records for labels, major and minor, all across the world. Ernie and the Automatics boast two former original members of the multiplatinum selling band BOSTON. Barry Goudreau on guitar and Sib Hashian on drums, reunited for the first time in 25 years. Brian Maes, lead vocals and keyboard, was with Goudreau post-Boston, when he formed RTZ with other Boston-ites, the late Brad Delp and bass player Tim Archibald. Maes and Archibald also toured the world together in Peter Wolf's House Party Five. Saxophonist Michael "Tunes" Antunes arrived in the Automatics line up while still performing with John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. Together, it all adds up to a lot of history and a great back story.
Foghat - Sunday@4:00pm
Capping off the event, Foghat began their career in 1971 as a bunch of rather unpretentious young Brits with an affection for American blues and '50s rock 'n' roll. By the middle of the decade, they had evolved into a major touring and recording act, playing a pumped-up brand of boogie-rock to arena-size audiences. Their looks grew flashier, their sound fattened and filled out, yet the roots-rock core of the band remained ever-present under the surface. From the viewpoint of certain critics, Foghat unduly compromised their early blues-based approach in order to reap commercial rewards. Certainly, their mid-'70s hits ("Slow Ride," "Drivin' Wheel," "Stone Blue") were not aimed at the rock purists of the world. But it's also true that they continued to record traditional blues and R&B material throughout their years with Bearsville Records. In fact, Foghat's final albums on Bearsville reaffirmed their love for unadulterated, primal American music.
THE ARTISAN FAIR
As is the annual tradition, Scituate will transform Front Street from a two-lane shopping district into a pedestrian-only open market fair lined with local and regional artisans showcasing their juried crafts and handmade goods. Featuring everything from art and photography to jewelry and pottery, each exhibitor brings a personal passion to their one-of-a-kind creations. Many of this year’s artisans will celebrate nautical and beach themes in tribute to Scituate’s heritage.
Kathleen Masterson of Kem Designs in Eastham, MA (kemdesigns.net) will be crafting hand-made jewelry fashioned from smoothed beach stones washed ashore from the Minot and Egypt beaches of Scituate. Diane Page of Santa Rosa Beach, FL (dianepage.com) is bringing colorful beach glass jewelry made from global glass pieces found throughout her travels to Europe, the Caribbean, Greece, the South of France, Egypt Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Hawaii and Tahiti. Holly Daniels of Boston, MA (beachsandsnowflakes.com) molds whimsical beach sand snowflake ornaments with authentic sand gathered from the Scituate beaches of Humarock and Peggotty for this show’s display. Sandi Smith of Photographs by Sandi in Weymouth, MA (imagemaker79.googlepages.com/photographsbysandi) has captured compelling still life nautical scenes from the beaches and coastline of the South Shore. Artist and children’s book author/illustrator Dean Morrissey of Accord, MA (deanmorrisseystudio.com) will feature his art, often inspired by the sea, as well as his popular books including “The Ship of Dreams”.
Demonstrating an eclectic mix of shopping at the fair, additional artisans include Michelle Jones of Hoosier Magnolia in Roxbury, MA (hoosiermagnolia.com), designer of contemporary children’s clothing and accessories inspired by graphic patterns and vibrant colors. Artist Christine Winship of Allston, MA (christinewinship.com), trained at the Art Institute of Boston, paints keepsake watercolor pet portraits. Laura Bergeron of Mountain Laurel Handwork in Falmouth, MA (vintagebuttonjewelry.com) is an imaginative silversmith who recycles vintage buttons and typewriter keys for eye-catching cufflinks, earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Helen Najarian of Cambridge, MA (helennajarian.com) hand-shapes functional pottery glazed with multiple colors resulting in a kaleidescope of patterns unique to each piece. Deb Schueter of Beadazzled Creations in Norwell, MA handcrafts glass, stainless and acrylic entertaining pieces embellished with colored glass gems.
There is no entrance fee to shop the artisan fair and it will remain open from 9am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.
THE WATERFRONT MARKETPLACE
In the spirit of traditional open-air festivals, the waterfront marketplace features additional shopping for festival-goers of all ages. T-shirts, toys, children’s books, summer-wear, and other novelty items will compliment imported goods from fair trade groups hailing from India, Peru and Nepal. Festival food and drink will be available from a variety of cart vendors.
Non-profit organizations will also be on site including the The Scituate Historical Society (scituatehistoricalsociety.org/) to welcome visitors for tours of the town’s historic sites including The Scituate Lighthouse, Lawson Tower, The Cudworth House, Barn & Cattle Pound, The GAR Hall, Old Oaken Bucket Homestead and Well, Stockbridge Mill, The Mann Farmhouse and Museum, and The Maritime Irish Mossing Museum. The purpose of the society is to promote the study of local history and to preserve the antiquities of Scituate and those municipalities that were anciently a part of the town.
The Scituate Art Association (scituateart.com) is participating in this year’s festival by hosting a children’s workshop. Kids are welcome to create their own art masterpieces with the guidance of art association members. The Scituate Arts Association is a non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors staffed by volunteers. For over 45 years, they have been an active, integral part of Scituate initiating countless programs that weave the art of life into the life of the Scituate community.
Also for children, the Kiddie Carnival features over a dozen amusement rides and games for younger children. The rides will be open from 10am-5pm Saturday and Sunday.
NAUTICAL SPECIAL EVENTS
Additional events designed to celebrate Scituate’s love of the sea include the Luminaria, where at 8:30pm on Friday, the shoreline glows with candles places along the coastline by town residents. On Saturday at 10:30 beginning at the Jericho Road Beach, spectators are invited to root on their favorite vessel during the traditional Dory/Rowing Races in the harbor, which also include kayak, working boat, slide seat and under 18 categories. On Sunday at 1pm, all are invited to view the Blessing of the Fleet and the Parade of Boats as they gracefully glide through the harbor.
This year, The Scituate Chamber of Commerce is expanding the annual Oyster Shucking Contest to include Chefs vs. Fisherman. Oysters, provided by Mullaney’s Seafood in Scituate, will take center stage as skilled professionals from both local industries battle to see who can most skillfully shuck twelve oysters in the fastest time. Fisherman participating this year hail from Scituate Harbor’s active fishing fleet. Chefs from area restaurants include Riva in Scituate, Tosca in Hingham and Bia Bistro in Cohasset. The participant with the fastest time will win a $500 cash prize. The event will be held outdoors on Cole Parkway beginning at 2pm.
