Outgoing State Rep. Jim Cantwell announces succession plan

As he prepares to step down later this month, State Rep. James Cantwell says experienced staff and other South Shore legislators will serve his district until the state election this fall.

“I have full confidence that there won’t be any loss of representation. Every inquiry, every call will be handled expertly,” said Cantwell, who will resign on March 28 to serve as U.S. Sen. Ed Markey’s state director.

Cantwell, a Marshfield Democrat, has served in the House since 2009.

Cantwell said he met this week with state Sen. Patrick O’Connor and state Reps. Joan Meschino and Josh Cutler to discuss a succession plan. Calling the group a “tight-knit delegation,” Cantwell said he’s sure that the three of them will give his district adequate representation until after the Nov. 6 state election.

Nomination papers to run for Cantwell’s seat in the 4th Plymouth district are now available.
