The BURIAL GROUNDS of Plymouth Colony WITH HISTORIAN STEPHEN O’NEILL OCTOBER 16 at 7 PM GAR Hall 353 COUNTRY WAY, SCITUATE, MA $10 per person The Burial Grounds of Plymouth Colony – More than thirty burial grounds were established in the Plymouth Colony during the 17th Century. Several are still used for burials, some have been closed or abandoned, and a few are completely forgotten. Plymouth Colony’s burying grounds are 17th century landscapes that have lasted into the modern day. This illustrated talk will examine the characteristics of these burying grounds for what they reveal about the death and mourning customs and beliefs of the 17th century Plymouth Colonists. Stephen O’Neill is a graduate of Boston College and Boston University. He is currently the Executive Director of the Hanover Historical Society. This Fall, he is the Scholar-in-Residence at Taunton’s Old Colony History Museum. He is also Senior Lecturer in Suffolk University’s History Department where he has taught courses on the History of Plymouth Colony, History of Piracy, Material Culture, Public History & Cultural Heritage, and History Curating & Exhibiting. From 2004 to 2016, O’Neill was the Associate Director & Curator of Collections at Pilgrim Hall Museum in Plymouth, where he curated more than twenty temporary exhibitions. He has been a guest curator for exhibits on New England pirates at The Bostonian Society and Heritage Museums & Gardens. He has lectured widely on Plymouth Colony history, Pirate history, and lead tours of many burying grounds and cemeteries. O’Neill is a lifelong resident of the South Shore of Massachusetts, a member of the Old Colony Club in Plymouth, a life member of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, and a Proprietor of the Boston Athenaeum.
